Artist Elizabeth Crossley shares how landscape, nostalgia, and animals inspire her practice

with Donna Lowson

I moved up from London to Sheffield when I was 7, and from the age of 5 always wanted to be an artist. Studied at Sheffield College of Art for five years, graduating in 1968 with a Dip.A.D in Fine Art Sculpture.

Sheep have always been an inspiration to me because I loved seeing them on the moors as a child and feeding them.

I also love local landscapes, particularly snowscapes. Love to try various mixes of media, particularly with my classes when I worked as a lecturer in Painting and Drawing at Sheffield College.

My favourite piece of work is maybe a line of multicoloured sheep travelling along a snowy hillside. I won the 'Octogan Prize with this painting at the 'Great Sheffield Art Show' and now have a ceramic mug to remember it by.

I Have been commissioned to paint various subjects, including a group of sheep and alpacas in the snow and a  Kaola bear. Love commissions as they are a challenge and not always a subject I would choose.

I retired a few years ago, and my only challenge is to keep learning and developing my work.

Have sold several pieces of artwork. My buyers always seem delighted with their purchases.

I also joined a Fused Glass workshop for three years and loved it! Am hoping to include a couple of pieces in this exhibition.

I love working creatively in a variety of media and experimenting in this way. Have been so fortunate for the whole of my career, and my wish to be an artist when I was five years old certainly came true!

Here are a few more pieces of my artwork, mainly painted in Acrylic and fused glass.
